Interactive Musicworks: Student Outreach

Interactive Musicworks - Grades 4-12 Outreach Program

Lumedia presents “Interactive Musicworks,” a 45-minute multimedia concert showcasing short films inspired by early music, interspersed with live performance by members of the ensemble. Specific emphasis is music written for historic instruments, complete with theatrical narrative. Highlights include interaction with the instruments, an exhibit of behind-the-scenes footage of the creative process, and a question and answer session.

The multimedia, multi-disciplinary project will serve students in grades 4-12 in underserved schools in the Dallas Independent School District. Students will learn the origins of early music, and new ways to think about how this music is applied to the modern day film industry.  LM does this with an in-depth look at the creative process using examples of behind-the-scenes footage. Students will view and participate in an educational experience that is entertaining, engaging, informative and inspiring.

The project also illustrates and inspires how to bridge the gap between potential and achievement via the use of behind-the-scenes film footage. Ongoing studies have revealed that developmental success depends on the practice of delayed gratification. Students “scored higher on standardized tests, had better health, and were less likely to have behavior problems”. (Walter Mischel and Ebbe B. Ebbesen, Stanford University, 1970) The study of art and music instill the value of delayed gratification towards a goal and help build successful life strategies.

Specific goals of the project include:

  • Build students’ confidence in a musical environment, which will assist in creating future audiences for arts appreciation.

  • Gain knowledge of the baroque period and its historical significance in time.

  • Connect with classical musicians in the community.

  • Grasp the difference between baroque instruments and modern orchestral instruments.

  • Explore the structure of the ensemble and how it differs from a modern orchestra.

Interactive Musicworks - Stories in Assisted Living & Memory Care Centers Outreach Program

Seniors are a disproportionately growing part of the population whose quality of life, according to research, can be improved and influenced by musical activities.

In 20-21, Lumedia Musicworks created the first installment of ‘Stories’. These films weave together the lives and works of the first distinguished female composers. Each story includes a performance of a selected work. Our current ‘5 Stories’ program will continue thematic exploration of underrepresented works in early music.

Elaine Scholly and LM Musicians will travel on-location to assisted-living centers across DFW to present the film. Ms Scholly, a community educator and advocate for dementia and Alzheimer’s awareness, will facilitate discussion following the film's viewing. The program concludes with a baroque instrumens with a show and tell, and question and answer session.

Short Films

 Three Short Film Creations

Lumedia will produce three new cinematic short films set to early music in November, February, and April.

The films will be released live in the community at in-person events in Frisco and Dallas. Following each event they will be released on YouTube (and other social platforms.) In addition to using these film creations for our own outreach programming, they will be shared with music educators internationally free of charge. We will also distribute to children’s hospitals and senior centers’ in-house television networks at no cost.
